"Jesus said to him, “I am the [only] Way [to God] and the [real] Truth and the [real] Life; no one comes to the Father but through Me" (John 14:6, AMP).
As quoted by Jesus, He is the only way!
John 3:16-18 [AMP]:
“For God so [greatly] loved and dearly prized the world, that He [even] gave His [One and] only begotten Son, so that whoever believes and trusts in Him [as Savior] shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge and condemn the world [that is, to initiate the final judgment of the world], but that the world might be saved through Him. Whoever believes and has decided to trust in Him [as personal Savior and Lord] is not judged [for this one, there is no judgment, no rejection, no condemnation]; but the one who does not believe [and has decided to reject Him as personal Savior and Lord] is judged already [that one has been convicted and sentenced], because he has not believed and trusted in the name of the [One and] only begotten Son of God [the One who is truly unique, the only One of His kind, the One who alone can save him]."
As Jesus was speaking with His disciples, He said, "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), to be with you forever—the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive [and take to its heart] because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He (the Holy Spirit) remains with you continually and will be in you" (John 14:16-17, AMP).
The Holy Spirit is our Counselor, Advocate, and Source of Truth. Jesus enables His followers to receive the Holy Spirit, as noted in John 7:37-39, which highlights His message to the crowd, as it says, “Now on the last and most important day of the feast, Jesus stood and called out [in a loud voice], “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink! He who believes in Me [who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Me], as the Scripture has said, ‘From his innermost being will flow continually rivers of living water.’” But He was speaking of the [Holy] Spirit, whom those who believed in Him [as Savior] were to receive afterward. The Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified (raised to honor)” (AMP).
The Holy Spirit transforms us [spiritually and even mentally] and produces fruit within us, as noted in Galatians 5:22-24, as it says, “But the fruit of the Spirit [the result of His presence within us] is love [unselfish concern for others], joy, [inner] peace, patience [not the ability to wait, but how we act while waiting], kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature together with its passions and appetites” (AMP).
The gift of tongues is another gift of the Holy Spirit. It is real and available to all believers/followers of Jesus Christ that have received the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:3-4 provides the story of the disciples receiving the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues, as it says, “There appeared to them tongues resembling fire, which were being distributed [among them], and they rested on each one of them [as each person received the Holy Spirit]. And they were all filled [that is, diffused throughout their being] with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues (different languages), as the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak out [clearly and appropriately]” (AMP).
Jesus Christ said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6, NKJV). This indicates that He’s the only way. If a religion is teaching, practicing, or recommending anything in replace of or in addition to Jesus Christ, this would go against what Jesus said.
The term born again, can be found in John 3, Jesus told a Pharisee named Nicodemus the following, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, unless a person is born again [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, sanctified], he cannot [ever] see and experience the kingdom of God.” This prompted Nicodemus to ask the question, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born, can he?”
This was Jesus’ response, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot [ever] enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh [the physical is merely physical], and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be surprised that I have told you, ‘You must be born again [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, sanctified].’ The wind blows where it wishes and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it is coming from and where it is going; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit” (AMP).
What does this mean? To be born again is to receive new [spiritual] life afforded to us by God through acceptance of the Savior Jesus Christ.
“Blessed [gratefully praised and adored] be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant and boundless mercy has caused us to be born again [that is, to be reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, and set apart for His purpose] to an ever-living hope and confident assurance through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Peter 3:3, AMP).
This is a very important question. It’s best to start with the Ten Commandments and progress further. Exodus 20:2-17 says, “I am the Lord your God, who has brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
· You shall have no other gods before Me.
· You shall not make for yourself any idol, or any likeness (form, manifestation) of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth [as an object to worship]. You shall not worship them nor serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous (impassioned) God [demanding what is rightfully and uniquely mine], visiting (avenging) the iniquity (sin, guilt) of the fathers on the children [that is, calling the children to account for the sins of their fathers], to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing graciousness and steadfast lovingkindness to thousands [of generations] of those who love Me and keep My commandments.
· You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain [that is, irreverently, in false affirmations or in ways that impugn the character of God]; for the Lord will not hold guiltless nor leave unpunished the one who takes His name in vain [disregarding its reverence and its power].
· Remember the Sabbath (seventh) day to keep it holy (set apart, dedicated to God). Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath [a day of rest dedicated] to the Lord your God; on that day you shall not do any work, you or your son, or your daughter, or your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock or the temporary resident (foreigner) who stays within your [city] gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and everything that is in them, and He rested (ceased) on the seventh day. That is why the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy [that is, set it apart for His purposes].
· Honor (respect, obey, care for) your father and your mother, so that your days may be prolonged in the land the Lord your God gives you.
· You shall not commit murder (unjustified, deliberate homicide).
· You shall not commit adultery.
· You shall not steal [secretly, openly, fraudulently, or through carelessness].
· You shall not testify falsely [that is, lie, withhold, or manipulate the truth] against your neighbor (any person).
· You shall not covet [that is, selfishly desire and attempt to acquire] your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor” (AMP).
Now, let’s progress to what Jesus said about these Commandments when asked, which Commandment was most important. “And Jesus replied to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself [that is, unselfishly seek the best or higher good for others].’ The whole Law and the [writings of the] Prophets depend on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:37-40, AMP).
What does this mean? Love God with your everything, which is demonstrated through obedience to Him. This requires everyone to abstain from all forms of idolatry. Next, love yourself enough to keep your soul guarded against evil and fully submitted and surrendered to God, which will then allow you to love others as you love yourself. You’ll want the best [spiritually] for others, as you do for yourself. The best [spiritually] can only come from a true relationship with God through the Savior Jesus Christ.
The devil and demons (demonic forces, demonic spirits, evil spirits, unclean spirits, fallen angels) are real, and are referenced throughout the Bible (Old Testament & New Testament).
The devil (Satan) is referenced as the enemy, adversary, and accuser of the brothers and sisters (believers) and is said to keep bringing charges of sinful behavior against the believers before God day and night (Revelation 12:10). We see this in action in Job 1-2 and Zechariah 3. He’s also the one that attempted to tempt Jesus in the wilderness, as recorded in Matthew 4. 1 Peter 5:8 says, he prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
Demons were at the forefront of idolatry in the Old Testament, as many idolaters worshipped idols (e.g., goat idols), demons, field spirits, and foreign gods, which were all demons in disguise (e.g., Leviticus 17, Deuteronomy 32, 2 Chronicles 11, etc.). Jesus cast out many demons that possessed people (men, women, and children) as recorded throughout the New Testament (e.g., Matthew 4, Matthew 8, Matthew 9, Matthew 12, Matthew 15, Matthew 17, etc.). Additionally, 2 Peter 2:4 notifies us of the fallen angels and their doomed fate, as it says, “For if God did not [even] spare angels that sinned, but threw them into hell and sent them to pits of gloom to be kept [there] for judgment” (AMP).
Forces of evil (Satan and demons) do not have power over faithful (obedient) believers/followers of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ has been given all authority (and power, and victory) in heaven and on earth, and He gives His believers/followers that authority to operate on His behalf on earth, as noted in Matthew 12:17-20, which says, “The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” He said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like [a flash of] lightning. Listen carefully: I have given you authority [that you now possess] to tread on serpents and scorpions, and [the ability to exercise authority] over all the power of the enemy (Satan); and nothing will [in any way] harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven” (AMP).
This is what Jesus told the disciples in Matthew 28:18-20, “All authority (all power of absolute rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations [help the people to learn of Me, believe in Me, and obey My words], baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always [remaining with you perpetually—regardless of circumstance, and on every occasion], even to the end of the age” (AMP).
We are called and chosen to represent Jesus Christ on earth. This is done through love. To love Him is to obey His commandments (John 14:15). 1 John 3:23-24 says, “This is His commandment, that we believe [with personal faith and confident trust] in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and [that we unselfishly] love and seek the best for one another, just as He commanded us. The one who habitually keeps His commandments [obeying His word and following His precepts, abides and] remains in Him, and He in him. By this we know and have the proof that He [really] abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us [as a gift]” (AMP).
Avoid idolatry at all costs! Idolatry separates people from God and invokes curses that extend to future generations. Love God with your everything, and commit [wholeheartedly] to Him.
Consistent prayer is strongly recommended. Jesus provided helpful tips and an example of sufficient prayer in Matthew 5:5-13, as it says, “Also, when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to pray [publicly] standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets so that they may be seen by men. I assure you and most solemnly say to you, they [already] have their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your most private room, close the door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees [what is done] in secret will reward you. And when you pray, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. So do not be like them [praying as they do]; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
“Pray, then, in this way:
‘Our Father, who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven our debtors [letting go of both the wrong and the resentment]. ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.]’
Another helpful tip is found in Matthew 26:41, as Jesus was preparing to surrender Himself to the cross for our sins. It says, “Keep watch and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” (GNT).
Additionally, some demonic strongholds (oppression and/or possession) can only be broken through prayer and fasting. This means in addition to continuous prayer, incorporating intentional fasting is needed for deliverance. Matthew 17:14-21 says, And when they had come to the multitude, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. So I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him.”
Then Jesus answered and said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me.” And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour.
Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting” (NKJV).
Beware of false prophets, teachers, and teachings. In Matthew 7:5-20 Jesus is quoted as saying, “Beware of the false prophets, [teachers] who come to you dressed as sheep [appearing gentle and innocent], but inwardly are ravenous wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them [that is, by their contrived doctrine and self-focus]. Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the unhealthy tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore, by their fruit you will recognize them [as false prophets]” (AMP).
2 Peter 2 is filled with warnings of false prophets. It starts with, “But [in those days] false prophets arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will subtly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways, and because of them the way of truth will be maligned. And in their greed they will exploit you with false arguments and twisted doctrine. Their sentence [of condemnation which God has decreed] from a time long ago is not idle [but is still in force], and their destruction and deepening misery is not asleep [but is on its way]” (2 Peter 2:1-3, AMP).
Also, beware of traditions rooted in idolatry. Question everything! Test all things by aligning it to the Word of God (1 Thessalonians 5:21-22). This requires understanding of the Bible (Old Testament & New Testament), so that you know what to stay away from, and have awareness of the adverse consequences of idolatrous actions.
It’s important to note that there’s a result (consequence) for every action. Stay far away from idolatry! Revelation 21:8, says, “But as for the cowards and unbelieving and abominable [who are devoid of character and personal integrity and practice or tolerate immorality], and murderers, and sorcerers [with intoxicating drugs], and idolaters and occultists [who practice and teach false religions], and all the liars [who knowingly deceive and twist truth], their part will be in the lake that blazes with fire and brimstone, which is the second death” (AMP).
Romans 10:8-13 [AMP]
But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word [the message, the basis] of faith which we preach— because if you acknowledge and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord [recognizing His power, authority, and majesty as God], and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart a person believes [in Christ as Savior] resulting in his justification [that is, being made righteous—being freed of the guilt of sin and made acceptable to God]; and with the mouth he acknowledges and confesses [his faith openly], resulting in and confirming [his] salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him [whoever adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Him] will not be disappointed [in his expectations].” For there is no distinction between Jew and Gentile; for the same Lord is Lord over all [of us], and [He is] abounding in riches (blessings) for all who call on Him [in faith and prayer]. For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord [in prayer] will be saved.”
See below for steps to take.
Example: “Jesus Christ, please forgive me for my sins and guide me through the Holy Spirit to turn away from all disobedience, idolatry, pride, rebellion, evil, and sin. Create in me a new heart, a clean heart, a humble heart filled with Your love and peace."
Example: “Jesus Christ, I believe that You willingly died on the cross for my sins and rose from the dead after three days, defeating death, sin, and evil, along with everything that stands against the Father (God). Your victory has established a place for me in Your kingdom. I receive Your love and grace, and I humbly surrender my all to You. I submit to You, my Savior, seeking Holy Spirit guidance in my life. I give You my burdens, my fears, my worries, my pain, and everything that I have."
Example: “Jesus Christ, I commit my complete life to You. I cannot live another day without You. Please lead me, guide me, and teach me throughout this new journey of life with You. Help me in my unbelief, help me to be delivered from evil, help me to discern the traps of evil, and help me to resist temptation to sin. Break all chains and all covenants and agreements with evil. Wash me clean, and I will be clean. Save me, and I will be saved. Heal me, and I will be healed. Deliver me, and I will be delivered. You are my Lord and Savior, and I am Yours forever. Amen."
Committing to the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is the greatest decision we could make. Now, it’s time to remain committed to His teachings. This requires continued obedience to the Word of God, which will help you navigate the Christianity questions that may arise and abstain from the things designed to separate you from God. Disobedience, idolatry, rebellion, and pride are the leading stumbling blocks, so be on guard. Seek the Holy Spirit's guidance to stay steadfast. Be covered by God through Jesus Christ. Submit and surrender to Him fully. Don’t add to or take away from His Word. Believe in Him, accept Him, and live for Him. He’ll be with you when others abandon you and when opposition surrounds you. He’ll be with you always. So, live for God through Jesus Christ, forever.
